Painting Talk: Scotch & Cigarettes

For my paintings to work, I need to feel an emotional connection. Composition, color, technique and other elements play a role, but an emotional connection is the driving force behind every piece I create. To move forward with any given painting, I often find the next step is to sit with it and look closely to uncover what I feel about it. Many artists have done this; deKooning studied his paintings for long stretches with scotch and cigarettes, thus the title of this video. I may sip tea instead of scotch, and I don’t smoke, but the intent is the same … for the painting to reveal to me what I want to say through it and how. Do you do this too or something else?
