Your Purple Crayon
I was told a few years ago by author Leah Komaiko that your favorite early childhood book is the story of how you go through life.
My favorite book was Harold and the Purple Crayon. Harold draws his night time adventures in purple - a color blending earth red and sky blue. The line realizes Harold’s every desire which then reveals the unintended consequences of his every decision. Too dark to see my way? I’ll draw the moon to light my path. I’m Hungry! I’ll draw some pies to eat! Too much food now so I’ll draw a moose and a porcupine to finish the pie . . .
Creativity holds the crayon making the purple line, taking Harold wherever he fancies and dreaming up solutions to whatever he encounters along his way.
SO . . .
Do you remember your favorite childhood book?
How does the story reflect who you are today?
Is it showing up in your approach to making artwork?
I’d love to hear your stories!
