Your Practice is the Prize

The Evening Walk | oil stick on claybord | 12 x 12”

The artistic practice is an ongoing journey that defines who we are, how we spend our time (and money!) and what we contribute to the world through our work. The act of completing work lives within our practice, yielding a finished “product.”

Sometimes it’s a challenge to widen our lens and take in the whole of our practice. We perceive that participating in the Art World requires each piece we create to be “good” and that we “need” a cohesive body of work. And, we WANT to make work we like and are proud to show people!

Being results-driven can cloud the truth of why we make art: It is our life blood.

The just-released film Showing Up starring Michelle Williams is about honoring the artistic practice as the prize.
(The film) uniquely tells a story of an artist working far from any monetary goals or God complex. It is a meditation on observing as a skill, making as habit, and the goal to simply sustain both. - Kealey Boyd, Hyperallergic

I have yet to see the film but look forward to watching and pondering afterwards . . .
