Your Inner Hovercraft

Inner Alchemy | oil on panel | 24”x 24”

Swirling thoughts and ideas came together on my early morning walk.
They are traveling in their inner hovercraft.

“They” as in the plural sense of the word, refers to Cate Blanchett, Enrique Martinez Celaya, and Joni Mitchell. And my constellation thinking eventually formed this awareness: In different ways each of these brilliant artists expresses their lifeblood-need to exist within opposing realities. . . to float between this and that, here and there, and relish the gray area.

That moment, that intake of breath before the words come out or the music comes out. . . I want to be there. I want to be permanently there.
- Cate Blanchett

I’m an artist, but I’m also a physicist. . .(My studio practice is ) a cross between laboratories and a monastery, that kind of hybrid place.
-
Enrique Martinez Celaya

Like a welder’s torch, that heat and point of contact between flame and object - that’s where Joni likes to live.
- Graham Nash discussing Joni Mitchell

Your inner hovercraft allows you to float just above the ground without completely disconnecting from the surrounding world. It’s a state of mind that gracefully embraces your vicissitudes in the business of life. It’s a state of flow that totally envelops your whole being in the act of making art.

My inner hovercraft keeps me going. . .
